Embryo

The creation of life is a miracle every creature experiences. From plants, to insects, to animals, to us, this cycle is inevitable and beautiful. Embryo is a representation of the interconnectivity and interdependance of life within nature.

This design was inspired by my previous work In Utero

Enjoy!

The term Mama Bear, for me, has always meant a mother at her most caring, protective and fearsome. That's why I chose grizzly bears as my subject. The roots were chosen as a symbol for the interconnectivety of life that surrounds us all.

I started by doing a quick sketch of my idea.

Here are the photos I referenced for this piece.

After choosing my references, my design changed. I probably should have drawn a new sketch but instead I dove right into the piece.

I started by gesturing in the basic forms, making sure that I had the right proportions and placement for each element in the composition. Then I added the smaller shapes to define what each element is. I added some cross-contour lines to help me imagine the third dimension. At this point, I started drawing (and shading) the roots following the cross-contour lines to emphasize the three dimensionality of the design.

I roots on the mother bear's head were a little too uniform for me. I changed them to add more variety. Only her nose and eyes are real bear. The rest are roots. They were left to act as a clue to the image hidden in the roots. At this point, I chose to add the second set of bears inside the cub. I wanted to add another level of interest to the piece.

I used white charcoal to help the cub stand out and added some highlights on the mother bear's nose and eyes.

This original piece is now for sale as well as a limited series signed print.
